We can thank a 14 year old for the shrine at Lourdes
The shrine at Lourdes was discovered by a fourteen year old girl named Bernadette Soubirous. This young, uneducated girl witnessed an apparition of a robed lady a grand total of 18 times between February and July, 1858, in a small grotto close to the town of Lourdes. During one of the apparitions the lady revealed herself to Bernadette to be the Virgin Mary, shortly afterwards the sacred pool appeared and the rest is history as we say.

Since the original discovery back in 1858 Lourdes has been visited by an estimated 200 million pilgrims in total.
